We were given books a selection to choose from. then we were asked to open at any pages we wanted and scan it black out the words that were not relevant to us to make a blackout poem. I had no problem doing this and was quite happy to draw and out marks on the book, in fact, most of my book was covered in Lines. I found it quite interesting the phrases and words that I put chose. My poem I feel related to my anxiety of not doing my own art practice how I am going to find everything this year am I good enough to pass this course.
We were later asked to make art in our books I found lovely old paper and pins and started to rip and pin it to a page in the book. I didn’t really pay much attention to what I was doing I was just moving my hands and doing a repetitive movement. I can definitely see the benefits of using a book it could be a book that means something to a client or represents something from a clients life if it was a traumatic book that related to there story they may find it helpful to change the book rewrite the story block out the words they don’t like add there own version of events essential create their own story from the book. It would take away the scariness of a blank piece of paper but I would need to be careful as to how a client reacts to destroying a book as many people in the class had different reactions to damaging a book and a client may feel the same way it all would come down to there relationship with books but you could also do it with newspapers magazines.
using old books in art this could be something about resistance but I would have to be careful that I don’t annoy a person doing this as they may not be happy to damage a book. But the different paper smells types of writing old picture that are within old books is a whole resource that I had not considered the fact that we confine ourselves to having to use nice flat white paper when the different textures and layers you could achieve in an old book the book could be a favorite book or a hated book where the client could rewrite the story with art and create something new from it.
a novel can also be a sketchbook draw out the story tear out what’s not needed write a novel about there own life stitch and sew the book cut deep into the pages to reveal the next
collage making a college with the old book this could be magazines leaflets old letters anything really to make a new meaning you don’t even have to use glue it could be sewn or folded to make it 3D cut out to make stencils
The idea of reusing books is new to me as you are taught to look after your books back them with paper keep them looking like new but I have found from starting my masters I have no problem covering a book in highlighter pen makers so I can find the point that stood out to me I have no yet made art within a book but its on my list to act against what I have been taught and find new ways of making a sketchbook to think a little more outside the box to think in a way that any material is a resource waiting to be explored.

they have sketchbooks in every size and color in every medium though of from professionals to people that just like to make art all in one place every style and technique imaginable. This truly shows that a sketch book an by anything the only thing stopping us is ourselves and our notions of what it should be just like it is ourselves that stop us from doing art as we cant meet the expention that we have in ourselves this shows us that we should break the rules and do what we want to make art of any kind the only rules have fun, learn something new about the art or yourself be proud of what you do its part of you.
